The Things No One Tells You About 30A
If you’ve been dreaming about a 30A vacation, you’ve probably seen the turquoise water, white sand, pastel beach towns, bikes, golf carts and picture-perfect sunsets.
And yes… all of that is real.
But after spending a lot of time on 30A, we’ve learned there are a few things you don’t really discover until you’re here.
So before you pack the beach bag and hit the road, here are the things no one tells you about visiting 30A.
1. 30A isn’t actually one town
This is probably the biggest surprise for first-time visitors.
“30A” refers to the scenic highway that runs along the Gulf Coast through a collection of small beach communities. And each one has its own personality.
Seaside is lively and iconic. Rosemary Beach feels polished and walkable. Grayton Beach is funky and laid-back. Blue Mountain Beach is relaxed and local. WaterColor is beautiful and peaceful.
And those are just a few.
Where you stay can completely change your vacation experience.
That’s why we always recommend choosing your location based on the kind of vacation you want—not just searching for a house that looks cute in the photos.
2. Everything looks close on a map… until it isn’t
30A is beautiful, but during busy travel weeks, traffic can be surprisingly slow.
A restaurant that looks like a quick drive away might take considerably longer during peak dinner hours.
This is one of the reasons we love staying somewhere where you can walk or bike to some of what you need.
Because on vacation, nobody wants to spend 35 minutes in traffic to go two miles.
3. You will want bikes
There is something about riding a bike on 30A that instantly puts you in vacation mode.
You can cruise to coffee, explore neighboring communities, grab lunch or just wander around with nowhere particular to be.
And honestly? Sometimes the bike ride is the activity.
If your rental includes bikes, use them. If it doesn’t, renting a few for your stay can be one of the best little upgrades you make.
4. A golf cart can completely change your stay
Golf carts are everywhere on 30A, and for good reason.
They make beach trips, restaurant runs and exploring the neighborhood ridiculously fun.
But there’s an important catch: you can’t just drive a golf cart anywhere you want.
Rules vary by location, and there are roads where golf carts aren't permitted. Make sure you understand the rules for your rental and community before you hop in and take off.

5. Beach access matters more than you think
When you're booking a rental, “near the beach” sounds great.
But ask yourself:
Which beach access?
Is there parking? Is it walkable? Are there stairs? Is it crowded? How far is it when you're carrying chairs, an umbrella, toys and approximately 47 things your kids suddenly need?
Knowing your closest beach access before you arrive can make your first beach day dramatically easier.
6. The beach isn't guaranteed to look like Instagram every day
We know.
You came for emerald water and white sand.
And 30A absolutely delivers on those dreamy beach days.
But the Gulf is a living, changing body of water. Some days are crystal clear and calm. Other days may bring waves, seaweed, wind or less-than-perfect water conditions.
Don't let one cloudy-water day ruin your trip.
There is still plenty of vacation to be had.
7. Restaurants get BUSY
Especially during spring break and summer.
If there's somewhere you've been dying to try, don't assume you'll be able to walk in at 7 p.m. and grab a table.
Make reservations when you can, consider eating a little earlier, and don't be afraid to explore outside the most popular spots.
Some of our favorite 30A memories have come from places we almost didn't try.
8. You don't have to spend every day at the most famous beach towns
This is one of our favorite 30A secrets.
Yes, go see Seaside.
Yes, wander around Rosemary.
But don't feel like you have to spend your entire vacation bouncing from one popular spot to another.
Some of the best days are the slow ones:
Coffee.
Bike ride.
Beach.
Pool.
Lunch.
Nap.
Golf cart cruise.
Sunset.
Repeat.
9. Grocery shopping at the wrong time is a rookie mistake
Arriving on Saturday afternoon and deciding to “just swing by the grocery store” can be… an experience.
If you're staying for several nights, consider ordering groceries ahead of time or shopping before the busiest part of the day.
And don't forget the little things: breakfast food, drinks, snacks, sunscreen and everything you need for your first morning.
Because nobody wants to wake up on vacation and realize there's no coffee.
10. You probably don't need to pack as much as you think
This one is especially important for families.
Before filling your car to the roof, check what your rental already provides.
Many 30A vacation rentals include beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, beach toys, bikes, pack-n-plays, high chairs and other family essentials.
At Stay Days, we try to handle those little details before you arrive so you can spend less time packing and more time figuring out which beach you're going to tomorrow.
11. The best 30A memories aren't always the expensive ones
You can absolutely have an amazing dinner, book a boat excursion or spend the day shopping.
But some of our favorite 30A moments are completely free.
A sunset bike ride.
Kids running through the pool.
A golf cart cruise with nowhere to go.
Coffee on the porch.
Walking barefoot through the sand.
Watching the sky change colors over the Gulf.
You don't have to schedule every minute to have an incredible vacation.
12. Your location matters more than having the “perfect” house
This is worth repeating.
A gorgeous vacation rental that requires you to drive everywhere may not be the best fit for your family.
Think about how you actually vacation.
Do you want to walk to the beach?
Bike to breakfast?
Be close to restaurants?
Have a pool?
Have a golf cart?
Be somewhere quieter?
Once you figure that out, choosing the right part of 30A becomes much easier.
13. Peak season is… peak
30A can be busy.
Really busy.
If you're traveling during spring break, summer or a holiday weekend, expect higher rates, fuller restaurants, more traffic and busier beaches.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't come.
It just means set your expectations appropriately.
And if you have flexibility, traveling during the shoulder seasons can be magic.
You may get warmer weather, fewer crowds and a little more breathing room.
14. You don't need a packed itinerary
This might be the most important thing we can tell you.
You came to 30A to relax.
You don't need to wake up with a spreadsheet of activities.
Some of the best 30A vacations are the ones where the schedule is basically:
Beach → pool → eat → repeat.
Leave some room for spontaneous stops, long lunches and doing absolutely nothing.
That's kind of the point.
15. 30A gets under your skin
And here's the thing no one really tells you…
You might leave already planning your next trip.
There's something about the combination of white sand, warm Gulf water, little beach communities, bikes, golf carts and slow mornings that makes people want to come back.
Maybe it's the beach.
Maybe it's the sunshine.
Maybe it's the fact that nobody looks at you funny when you show up to breakfast in a swimsuit cover-up.
Whatever it is…
30A has a way of turning a vacation into a tradition.
Our biggest piece of advice?
Don't try to conquer 30A.
Pick your little corner, slow down, put your phone away for a while, and actually enjoy it.
Ride the bike.
Take the golf cart.
Stay for sunset.
Order the dessert.
Go to the beach one more time.
Because the best 30A memories usually aren't the ones you planned six months in advance.
They're the ones that happen when you finally stop rushing.
